It is easy to get carried away with all the new fangled gadgets that they have for photography. Our work can be one of the most expensive lines of work out there. But there is no reason why you should have to pay thousands of dollars on gear. Especially when as a mom all your extra money goes towards the little people in your life.
It can be a joy, a challenge to work with the bare minimum that you find around your house. From creating a stand for your camera out of a bag of grass seed and the head rest from a car seat so you can get just the right angle. It may be harder to work with what you have. There's a lot more thought that has to go into a creation when you don't have five strobe lights with stands or a tripod that can be bent to accommodate any angle imaginable. But it's so much more rewarding when you can say "I created that out of some clamps, table lamps, a bed sheet and some string," especially when you can't be behind the camera to release the shutter as in the situation pictured above.
There will come a time when "MacGyver-ing" something just isn't going to cut it. For now, take pleasure in the fact that you get to use a new side of your creative brain.
